SUMMARY:Pest Control workshop & launch of ESAI Trap Library
DESCRIPTION:John Williamson from Pest Free Banks Peninsula will be there to talk about their project and the cross over between their work and how ESAI members can help in reducing pest numbers in the Ellesmere area. \nJohn will talk about each pest species\, correct placement of traps\, correct bait to use for each pest. He will also demonstrate how to set and unset the traps. \nFarmers/landowners will be given the opportunity to register to borrow traps on the day of the workshop. \n\nSpecific requirements of each farmer/landowner wanting to borrow traps will be assessed based on property location\, what pests have been observed\, landscape\, and vegetation considerations ie waterways\, streams\, wetlands\, trees etc. Based on this information suitable traps will be assigned.\nAn agreement will be signed by the landowner/farmer and will detail what is expected of each party.\nTraps will be loaned for a period of 3 months initially\, if catch rates are still high the landowner can apply to extend it for another 3 months to a maximum of 6 months.\n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Ellesmere Sustainable Agriculture Inc (ESAI) is inviting its members and any local residents to attend a public information evening on March 31 where senior ecologists will present the findings of a feasibility study into restoring a fish passage between the Rakaia River lagoon and Jollies Brook.\nThe study showed the potential for significant benefits for the environment in the area.  \n\n\n\n\nThe assessment included planning and ecological investigations to determine if there were any ‘red flags’ associated with the proposal and made recommendations for further studies to supplement known information.  \n\n\nThe feasibility study was carried out by senior ecologists from Pattle Delamore Partners (PDP) on behalf of ESAI.\n\n\nThe feasibility study concluded that opening up the waterway would provide passage for a variety of fish species to move in and out of Jollies Brook\, improve the water quality through increased volume\, reduce stagnation and restore Jollies Brook Lagoon to its former extent. \n\n\nPotential risks that were identified were possible passage of introduced predatory fish into the lagoon\, the spread of exotic plants and possible damage to the existing ecosystem. \n\n\nThe public information evening will be held on Thursday\, March 31 from 5:30pm at the Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall near Leeston.  \n\n\nDue to covid restrictions\, attendance will require vaccine passes to be shown. DESCRIPTION:ESAI is offering two aid courses in January. \nA recent Growsafe & Certified Handler course highlighted that farmers are now also required to have someone on farm that has been first aid trained so ESAI wants to support farmers who may need a certificate. \nThis course is offered free of charge for ESAI members and their farm staff. DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Wednesday January 12\, 5.30pm \nESAI members will have a wonderful opportunity to get together and meet Scott Robertson\, one of the most colourful and successful faces in New Zealand rugby.\nScott may have been born and raised in the Bay of Plenty\, but he will always be a much-loved adopted son of Canterbury after winning numerous national and Super Rugby titles with Canterbury and Crusaders teams as player and as coach after arriving here 25 years ago.\nBeing part of so many terrific teams\, but also many heart-breaking losses\, “Razor” will have endless stories to share\, his thoughts on what made those teams tick\, what their success formula was\, and most importantly\, how they coped with set-backs.\nRunning a professional rugby franchise is like running an agricultural business\, and many of his experiences will relate to the ups and downs you all deal with in your days on the farm.\nThe pressures of trying to balance work and family is one of the biggest challenges you have in common with Razor\, and the psychological pressures this creates in our lives.\nComing from a male-dominated industry\, not unlike farming\, many professional rugby players and coaches struggle to admit when they are not coping and when they need help\, so Scott will share his thoughts about having the courage to reach out to family and friends\, and how to look out for your mates who may be struggling.\nAside from this serious issue\, there will be plenty of laughs and a chance to catch up with your friends.
