SUMMARY:The Importance of Wetlands with Dr Rebecca Eivers
DESCRIPTION:Got a boggy patch you don’t know what to do with? \nLearn how to restore your land’s natural ‘kidney functions’ using small constructed and low-cost wetlands to improve water quality and make better use of wet areas. \nCome along to hear Dr Rebecca Eivers of Wai Kōkopu Consulting\, an expert in constructing such wetlands. She will share her practical knowledge on the amounts of contaminants simple wetlands can remove – benefiting both farming and nature. \nThe session\, advertised in our last newsletter\, will explore the different types of efficient and affordable wetland restorations and how to identify suitable sites. \nDr Eivers will also discuss the role of wetlands in reducing nitrates\, phosphate and sediment which are issues in our area. Learn how to recognise and enhance sites on your farm that may already be reducing nutrients to some extent. \n📅 Date: Tuesday\, 13th January 2026⏰ Time: 10 AM – 12.30 PM📍 Venue: Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall\, 164 Harts Road\, Lakeside🥪 Free lunch provided  \n    There may also be an opportunity to visit some potential wetland sites with Rebecca after lunch. \n✔ Put this date in your diary now.\n✔ Stay for a cuppa and lunch. \nPlease register by Friday 9th January 2026 by emailing\ndavid.tinaku@esai.co.nz \nor text 021 241 3549 \n  \nA word from David Hewson and the ESAI Committee: \n“Don’t miss Rebecca’s talk  – she is a sort-after speaker who really knows her stuff. \nMake some easy wins for your farm operation and the environment.  A must for assisting future compliance.” \n  \nWe look forward to seeing you there and sharing ideas that benefit both farming and nature.

Clint has a gift for turning complex science into practical\, paddock-ready knowledge that makes sense to farmers.\nWith re-consenting and changing freshwater rules just around the corner\, this workshop is your opportunity to get the inside track on the real data that affects your farm – not just models\, but actual data from our own catchment. \n📅 Date: Wednesday\, 20th August 2025⏰ Time: 10 AM – 12 PM📍   Venue: Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall\, 164 Harts Road🥪 Free lunch provided along with great science and a catch up with mates \nWhat’s on the agenda? \n\nHow your land use and geology shape groundwater N and P flows – and what that means for your farm. SUMMARY:Pest Control workshop & launch of ESAI Trap Library
DESCRIPTION:John Williamson from Pest Free Banks Peninsula will be there to talk about their project and the cross over between their work and how ESAI members can help in reducing pest numbers in the Ellesmere area. \nJohn will talk about each pest species\, correct placement of traps\, correct bait to use for each pest. He will also demonstrate how to set and unset the traps. \nFarmers/landowners will be given the opportunity to register to borrow traps on the day of the workshop. \n\nSpecific requirements of each farmer/landowner wanting to borrow traps will be assessed based on property location\, what pests have been observed\, landscape\, and vegetation considerations ie waterways\, streams\, wetlands\, trees etc. Based on this information suitable traps will be assigned.\nAn agreement will be signed by the landowner/farmer and will detail what is expected of each party.\nTraps will be loaned for a period of 3 months initially\, if catch rates are still high the landowner can apply to extend it for another 3 months to a maximum of 6 months.\n\n  \n
